VINELAND – Staying true to its 70-year history of reaching the minds, hearts and hands of its students for Christ, Cumberland Christian School (CCS) is entering into a new era of educational excellence and has selected Ken Howard to lead the way as the school’s new Headmaster.

Howard brings with him 38 years of experience in Christian school administration and teaching. He was chosen among many applicants for his strong Association of Christian Schools International background, academic standards, biblical integration, school advancement, and community service.

“We couldn’t be more pleased with the selection of Ken Howard,” said Heidi Meckel Koering, board president, alumna.  “His knowledge, experience and dedication to Christian education makes him the perfect fit for our school.  We look forward to furthering our mission and enhancing all that we offer our students and families under his leadership.  We are excited and look forward to great things to come.”

Having committed his entire adult life to serving in Christian schools, Howard is passionate about the value of a Christian education.  “I am very excited to join CCS,” said Howard.  “The rich tradition of excellent Christian education for the past 70 years was a drawing card for the entire Howard family.  Working together with faculty and staff to grow the school population, expand regular and dual credit college course offerings, incorporate more technology into the classrooms, grow community service opportunities for students, and develop a long-range plan are among my immediate plans as Headmaster.  I can’t wait to get started.”

Howard was born and raised by two godly parents in western New York. As a result of his Christian upbringing, he recognized his need of salvation and accepted Christ as his Savior.

He has 38 years of experience in Christian education, 29 of those in Christian school administration and 9 as a teacher/athletic director.  He received a Bachelor’s Degree in health and physical education from Cedarville University and a Master’s Degree in Christian school administration from Tennessee Temple University.  While at Cedarville, Ken met his wife Sue, and they have been married for nearly 38 years. They have 4 adult children – 3 sons and a daughter.

Howard is fortunate to join a school with a rich history dating back to 1946.  It was then that a small group of families decided to help fill the area’s need for a Christian school.  With one teacher and 17 students, the Vineland Christian School opened its doors at its former Sunday School building on Spring Road in Vineland where it remained for the next 22 years.  As enrollment grew, so did the need for additional space and improved facilities so 10 and a half acres of land on Sherman Avenue in Vineland were purchased.

After 13 years of fund raising the Bower Building was born.  During the 1970-71 school year, ground was broken for an addition consisting of classrooms, office space and storage facilities.  An 8th Grade was also added at that time, followed by athletic fields, new classrooms, library and art room in 1978. The high school program was added in 1979, and in 1980, the school’s name was changed to Cumberland Christian to more accurately reflect the student population.

Today, CCS sits on a 28-acre campus and offers a complete Christian education through primary schooling, as well as through a homeschool partnership, special needs program and preschool.

CCS says it has only just begun making history and looks forward to what comes next with Howard at the helm.
