How Do I Find Out About Colleges?

College Search Engines

Students beginning to look for a college that will fit their personal needs and style can begin by using one of the on-line databases of college information through a popular search engine. By providing information about plans, interests, and personal preferences in a college, the search engine will provide a listing of colleges that will fit the particular criteria. In most college search engines, the student can change the criteria for the search and create a different list of colleges. It can prove useful to use a couple of different search engines in the process of looking for colleges, since each search engine looks at data in a slightly different manner.

The CollegeBoard

The CollegeBoard provides the ability to search for colleges providing a consistent picture of the institutions, an internet link to the college web site, and relevant financial information.

Student Edge

StudentEdge is a free online college and career planning resource center sponsored by Peterson's. It offers tools to help all high school students take ownership of the college planning process by letting them find scholarship money, prepare for exams, search for colleges, and explore career interests.

ChristianCollegeGuide.net

ChristianCollegeGuide.net is a web site sponsored by Christianity Today and focuses exclusively on Christian colleges. The site includes not only a search engine, but a variety of tools and articles to help students and parents make wise choices about college planning.

ChristianCollegeMentor

This site is sponsored by the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities and the National Association of Christian College Counselors and is a very helpful search engine for Christian colleges.

Fiding the Right College for You

This search engine is provided by the Department of Education and can be helpful to students and families in finding a college. This site will allow a student to select different approaches to finding a college.

Student Gateway to the U.S. Government

The United States Government has provided access to a collection of college search engines. The information provided includes both undergraduate and graduate schools.  The web site is more extensive and provides information concerning financial aid, careers, and the military service opportunities.

"I'm Going"

This is the newest contribution from the Department of Education and provides students and parents with an excellent collection of resources for discovering the issues relating to considering a college education. It is a web site that aims to motivate students with inspirational stories and information about planning, preparing and paying for college. Designed with students' input and participation, This web site was created by the U.S. Department of Education to be a go-to online resource for credible information about college that also provides real life experiences of peers who are already attending college.
